SubPress Nebula and Norton Award Nominees

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

nebulalogowhite.jpgWe’ve been lucky enough to have two SubPress titles nominated for Nebula Awards by the SFWA, including John Scalzi’s ultra-dark fantasy space opera, The God Engines. This has become our best-selling Scalzi title, and with good reason. As Publishers Weekly pointed out, “If J. G. Ballard and H. P. Lovecraft had ever collaborated on a space opera, the results might have been like this: ferociously inventive, painfully vivid, dispassionately bleak and dreadfully memorable.”

Also a Nebula nominee in the novella category is Kage Baker’s The Women of Nell Gwynne’s. We’re sold out of this title, though the novella will be reprinted later this year in the expanded Nell Gwynne’s Scarlet Spy, which will also include the novelette, “The Bohemian Astrobleme”.

Norton_Award_gold_small.jpgFinally, John Scalzi’s novel Zoe’s Tale is up for the Norton Award. Keep an eye out — we’ll be posting ordering information for the limited edition very soon.

Announcing COUNTERFEIT MAGIC, a New Novella by Kelley Armstrong

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Kelley_Armstrong_4 sm.jpg

Return to the world of Kelley Armstrong’s best-selling novels Dime Store Magic and Industrial Magic for Counterfeit Magic, a long original novella.

The first rule of a supernatural fight club? Don’t kill your opponent.

When the fighters come with lethal spells, werewolf strength and half-demon powers, that can be a lot tougher than it sounds. It’s hard to attract talent if they know they might not leave the ring alive. So when fighters at a California club start dying … it’s bad for business.

Witch detectives Paige Winterbourne and Savannah Levine take the case. Going undercover in the power-heavy arena of the fight club is a welcome change of pace for Paige, relegated to the role of The Wife as her husband struggles to find his place in his family’s Cabal—the corporate Mafia of the supernatural world.

As Paige is drawn deeper into new and dangerous corners of her world, she quickly discovers the greatest threat isn’t the killer in her sights. It’s something much, much closer to home. And this is one fight she can’t afford to lose.

The Limited Edition of Counterfeit Magic be leatherbound, with a completely different dust jacket than the Trade Edition. In addition, the Trade Edition cover will be reproduced as a full-color frontispiece. Both editions will feature 8-10 full page black and white interior illustrations.

Limited: 1000 signed numbered leatherbound copies, with different dust jacket: $45

Trade: Fully cloth bound hardcover edition: $25

New Novellas Turned in — Kelley Armstrong and K. J. Parker

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The past couple of days have been very happy ones here at SubPress. Kelley Armstrong just turned in Counterfeit Magic, a brand new novella set in the world of her popular novels Dime Store Magic and Industrial Magic. Kelley’s many fans will be even more pleased to know that the new novella is well over twice as long as Angelic was.

Still speaking of novellas, K. J. Parker just turned in her latest, tentatively titled Blue and Gold. No word on the subject matter yet, as we’ve just loaded it into our ereaders.

Meanwhile, Back at the Printer

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The God EnginesMeanwhile, back at the printer, we’ve just ordered a third printing of John Scalzi’s dark fantasy novella, The God Engines, which officially pushes it into the top spot as our best-selling Scalzi title yet.

We’re reprinting, yes, but mostly for our wholesale and large retail accounts. If you order direct from SubPress, you’ll still receive a first printing copy, though we expect that supply to hold out only for a few more weeks.

Michael Bishop — “The Library of Babble” Posted at Subterranean Online

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Subterranean Winter 2010

This week’s original story over at Subterranean Online is a brief one, but no less powerful for that. Michael Bishop has graced us with “The Library of Babble“, which should take you only a few minutes to read, but will linger far longer. Long-time readers may remember Bishop’s earlier tale, “The Pile“, which also more than deserves your attention. Both tales were based upon notes by Bishop’s son, Jamie.

Announcing New Collections by Daniel Abraham, Ian R. MacLeod, and Terry Dowling

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Leviathan Wept by Daniel Abraham.jpg

Here’s the first of three new collections we’re announcing, by new writer Daniel Abraham, acclaimed author of The Long Price Quartet and Hunter’s Run (with George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois).

Leviathan Wept and Other Stories may well be the best debut collection we’ve seen since Joe Hill’s 20th Century Ghosts. You’d do well to preorder a copy and see what all the excitement is about.

Next up is Journeys by Ian R. MacLeod, whose most recent novel, The Song of Time, won the 2009 Campbell award. Journeys gathers nine tales, including “The Hob Carpet,” a stunningly horrific novella, as well as “The Master Miller’s Tale,” another novella, this one a return to the world of his popular novels The Light Ages and The House of Storms.

Finally, we have a long gathering of the best recent work by Australian writer Terry Dowling. Collectors may remember that his collection from Cemetery Dance, Basic Black, sold out within a month of publication a few years ago. We have no reason to believe that Amberjack: Tales of Fear & Wonder will be any different, with its heady mix of sf, fantasy, and horror. Dowling’s a singular writer, shown to good effect in this new collection.

Announcing NELL GWYNNE’S SCARLET SPY by Kage Baker

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Nell Gwynnes-Scarlet cover2.jpg

Kage Baker may be gone, but her work lives on. Our major Baker title last year, The Women of Nell Gwynne’s, sold out quickly and now fetches $80+ on the collector’s market. We’ve decided to re-release this steampunk adventure in the fall as a trade paperback, under the title Nell Gwynne’s Scarlet Spy. To flesh the book out, making it more attractive to our wholesale and retail accounts, we’ve added the Lady Beatrice novelette, “The Bohemian Astrobleme.”

Watch for more Kage Baker books in the future as we work with her agent to bring projects to fruition.
