In Between by RA MacAvoy.jpg

We just finished designing the cover to R. A. MacAvoy’s In Between, a novella that marks her welcome return from a long publishing hiatus. Those of you who remember her wonderful novels Tea with the Black Dragon, Twisting the Rope, The Book of Kells, and The Lens of the World trilogy, have a warm hearted treat to look forward to. As Booklist noted of the new novella, “There isn’t any reason this spiritually supernatural novella couldn’t have sequels, and there are some hints that it will.”

Welcome back, Bertie, and thanks for letting SubPress publish you.

James P. Blaylock, THE EBB TIDE, and Fonts

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

The Ebb TideThis is a new one on us. The website fontcraft.com has a short review of James P. Blaylock’s new steampunk adventure, The Ebb Tide. While evaluating the design and fonts used in the book — quite favorably — they also note that The Ebb Tide is “certainly an interesting read, and the Steampunk ideas come thick and fast in a heady mixture of Jules Verne, H. P. Lovecraft and Arthur Conan Doyle. It’s a book worth reading and it’s good to see Blaylock back on the job and perhaps ready to bring us more unique steampunk stories in the future.”

Ebay — Lettered Editions at More than 50% Off

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Ebay AuctionsWe’re still in the process of moving the last of SubPress inventory into our new warehouse, and decided we’d rather offer up some great deals on lettered editions rather than have to transport them. You’ll find a ton of great lettereds discounted to $50 and sometimes below. If you’re quick on the draw, you’ll even find a few long-lost copies of the lettered edition of Tim Powers’ last novel, Three Days to Never, at more than 50% off the cover price.

Snag things while you can. With our upcoming release schedule, this is likely the last round of Ebay auctions we’ll have the opportunity to post for some time.

Announcing BONE AND JEWEL CREATURES by Elizabeth Bear

Monday, August 24th, 2009

SubPress favorite Elizabeth Bear has turned in a long (30,000 word) novella that’s on our schedule for early next year. (Fans of her New Amsterdam stories needn’t fret, as next year will likely see another one of those tales as well.)

As to Bone and Jewel Creatures, here’s the info:

Dark magic is afoot in the City of Jackals…

Eighty years Bijou the Artificer has been a Wizard of Messaline, building her servants from precious scraps, living with the memory of a great love that betrayed her. She is ready to rest.

But now her former apprentice, Brazen the Enchanter, has brought her a speechless feral child poisoned by a sorcerous infection. Now, Messaline is swept by a mysterious plague. Now the seeping corpses of the dead stalk the streets.

Now, finally, Bijou’s old nemesis–Bijou’s old love–Kaulas the Necromancer is unleashing a reeking half-death on Bijou’s people. And only Bijou and her creatures wrought of bone and jewels can save the City of Jackals from his final revenge.

The trade edition of Bone is bargain priced at only $20, a great way to introduce yourself to eBear’s work, or keep up with one of your favorite writers.

Subterranean Summer 2009

We’re in the homestretch of the Summer issue of Subterranean Online, and have just posted a few new items, including a brand new story (“Seventh Fall”) by Alex Irvine; an interview with Caitlin R. Kiernan, whose excellent new novel, The Red Tree, has just hit bookshelves; and a review of Joe Abercrombie’s bloody glorious new novel, Best Served Cold. I’m reading the latter right now, and it’s more than living up to the hype.

In Production But Not Yet Announced

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

We’re just gone to contract on a number of books, and are cranium deep in the design and proofing of others which we haven’t even announced yet. Here’s a small sample:

A Pleasure to Burn by Ray Bradbury;
Amberjack: Tales of Fear and Wonder by Terry Dowling;
Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman;
The Magic of Recluse by L. E. Modesitt;
The Best of Larry Niven;
Lesser Demons by Norman Partridge;
Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy 2 edited by William Schafer;
Zodiac by Neal Stephenson;
The Juniper Tree and Other Blue Rose Stories by Peter Straub;
Hard Luck Diggings by Jack Vance;

As mentioned, these are just a few of the titles that SubPress Director of Production Yanni Kuznia and I are working on. Next year’s schedule is shaping up well, with another 50-60 books on the slate.

K. J. Parker — PURPLE AND BLACK Going Out of Print

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Purple and BlackJust a quick note to let everyone know that the trade hardcover of K. J. Parker’s epistolary novella, Purple and Black, will be going out of print in the next week, as soon as I fax the latest wholesale account order to Tim and he has a chance to generate an invoice (we now have orders for at least 350 copies we will be unable to fill). As Publishers Weekly noted in its starred review, “…pseudonymous military fantasist Parker (The Company) keeps the letters, humor and tension moving at a quick clip… As enemies become stalwart allies, sorrow lurks within victory and a forgotten moment of youth threatens everything, Parker sends the brief (but never terse) story flying to a wrenching and all too realistic conclusion.”

Ray Bradbury — THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES — First Review is in

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The Martian ChroniclesThe Mad Hatter’s Bookshelf and Book Review took a bit of time with the ARC to Ray Bradbury’s upcoming The Martian Chronicles: the Complete Edition, and we’re more than pleased to see the book is being received as intended: “With more than 50 stories, essays, introductions, and two full-length screenplays by Bradbury, The Martian Chronicles: The Complete Edition is a volume destined for the display shelf. It will proudly sit there shouting to all who enter my library area and that this is one of the best books of its kind, ever. As soon as I opened the package I was blown away but it sheer size, weight, and completeness. I immediately starting reading the introductions and found myself reading the majority of the original stories and than thumbed through many of the unpublished short story gems, which would be worth the price alone for the true Bradbury die-hards. However, this is no single sitting book, but one to be savored and reread for years to come.”
