DARK INTEGERS AND OTHER STORIES by Greg Egan

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Dark Integers and Other StoriesGreg Egan’s excellent 80,000 word collection, Dark Integers and Other Stories, is now available as a trade paperback through our Far Territories imprint. As Publishers Weekly noted, “Egan (Teranesia) is renowned for bringing the most abstract concepts of physics and philosophy to life, and these diamond-hard science fiction stories ably showcase his talent.”

Don’t forget, later this year we have a longer gathering of Egan’s uncollected short fiction, Crystal Nights and Other Stories, on our schedule. The hardcover of Dark Integers sold out very quickly, and we expect the same of Crystal Nights.

Trade Paperback:
$14.95

THE STEEL REMAINS by Richard K. Morgan

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The Steel RemainsRichard K. Morgan’s The Steel Remains may well be this year’s most controversial epic fantasy, with its unsparing look at what it would really be like to live at ground level in an epic tale. In addition, Steel, along with Stephen King Goes to the Movies and The Shadow of the Wind, is likely the nicest limited edition we’ve produced lately, with different full-color endsheets (front and back), a full-color frontispiece, and a bold interior design printed in two colors.

Lettered Edition:
$250
Limited Edition:
$75

THE NONESUCH AND OTHERS by Brian Lumley

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The Nonesuch and OthersBrian Lumley’s latest collection, The Nonesuch and Others is a tightly themed volume, featuring a novella written exclusively for it. With the original tale, two uncommon reprints, a full-color wraparound dust jacket by Bob Eggleton — as well as a number of black and white interior decorations — those who love Brian’s punchy, pulpy prose can’t go wrong.

$35

Brian Lumley — THE NONESUCH AND OTHERS Shipped

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The Nonesuch and OthersSomehow, while all the shipping has been going on, we managed to send a book out to customers and forgot to note it.

Roughly a week ago, all orders (individual, bookstore, and wholesaler) for Brian Lumley’s nifty new collection, The Nonesuch and Others, were packed and shipped. We hope everyone enjoys this themed collection, which features three tales — including a brand new novella written especially for this volume — about one of Lumley’s most interesting protagonists.

In addition to the stories, The Nonesuch and Others features a striking wraparound dust jacket by Bob Eggleton, as well a number of smaller b&w illustrations that adorn the test.

THE SHADOW OF THE WIND Special Offer — Shipping Update

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Shadow of the WindWe moved Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book ahead of the copies of Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s The Shadow of the Wind we offered to our email newsletter subscribers at 50% off, but our shippers have been quite productive the past few days, so all copies of Shadow will head out via USPS on Monday, along with the last copies of Graveyard.

A word about the special: For the past three or four weeks, we’ve been offering one title a week to our customers at 50% off via our email newsletter. If you’re not already a subscriber, you can sign up on the right hand side of this page. We plan to continue these targeted specials for a bit longer, as they’re much easier to fit into our shipping schedule than the grab bags or larger 50% off discounts we try to run a couple of times a year. (We hope to be able to offer two big specials this year, but we’re shipping so many books, there’s no telling when we’ll have time for them.)

Neil Gaiman — THE GRAVEYARD BOOK Shipping and Stock Update

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Graveyard BookAll copies of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book will be en route to customers as of Monday morning. The book also looks to be sold out out on publication. We may have a very few slightly flawed copies remaining that we’ll either list at a discount in our email newsletter or return to our printer for credit. If you’re interested in a slightly flawed copy (most have a spot of glue on the gatefold foldout, or on the cover, that can’t be removed without damaging the book) feel free to drop me an email.

Celebrating Robert Silverberg and His Classic Novel, DYING INSIDE

Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg.jpg

Tor/Orb has issued a new edition of Robert Silverberg’s classic novel of a telepath losing his power. Dying Inside is one of the best — if not the best — examples of the melding of literary and sf sensibilities and techniques I’ve ever read. Head over to the Los Angeles Times to check out a recent article singling out this essential novel and creator. Congratulations Bob on the new edition, and the very much deserved publicity it’s generating.

New Books by Cherie Preist and Caitlin Kittredge

Cherie and Caitlin.jpg

Here’s our dynamic duo of Dark Fantasy.

SubPress favorite Cherie Priest has a great steampunk/zombie/dirigible/poison gas novel due out later this year, Boneshaker (Amazon, Indiebound), which I cannot recommend heartily enough. If that’s not enough pleasure, we also have her related short novel, Clementine, slated for early next year. It follows closely on the heels of the events in Boneshaker, while exploring different parts of our Civil War-era country and the devastation it’s suffered.

Caitlin Kittredge might not be familiar to SubPress readers, but she will be. This June she has a very dark supernatural detective novel, Street Magic (Amazon, B&N, Indiebound), due out from St. Martin’s. We were so impressed with an early version we read that we commissioned a related novella (to publish as a trade hardcover) and a chapbook (to accompany the limited edition), set in her newly crated world of Black London.

China Mieville — THE CITY & THE CITY Update

the city & the city by China Mieville.jpg

Here’s a first look at Vincent Chong’s brilliant cover for the limited edition of China Mieville’s newest novel, The City & the City. If the cover seems a touch familiar, it’s heavily influenced by two of the best mystery covers of all time, those Boris Artzybasheff created for the Raymond Chandler novels The Little Sister and The Long Good-bye more than fifty years ago.

We happen to think that City will take its place in that august company. As Publishers Weekly noted in its starred review, “Better known for New Weird fantasies (Perdido Street Station, etc.), bestseller Miéville offers an outstanding take on police procedurals with this barely speculative novel… Through this exaggerated metaphor of segregation, Miéville skillfully examines the illusions people embrace to preserve their preferred social realities.”

Not to be outdone, Booklist also graced The City & the City with a starred review: “An excellent police procedural and a fascinating urban fantasy, this is essential reading for all mystery and fantasy fans.”

We’ve used two-color printing throughout City, more creatively than ever, to hightlight its tricksy, playful nature. The novel is in the final stages of proofreading, and will be headed to the printer as soon as that is finished.
