Reactions to KULL: Exile of Atlantis
It’s always a bit dicey when picking up a limited edition series started by another publisher, but message board posts and the early word about Kull: Exlile of Atlantis we’ve received via email here at the SubPress offices are encouraging:
– Two days ago I received Subterranean’s edition of “Kull Exile of Atlantis” and would like to thank you and your staff for all the effort, which you put into this stunningly beautiful edition.
– Thank you for persevering over the long negotiations and making sure that the REH Library continued.
– Thank you for continuing the same high quality production as the first books in the series… and hey, I had no problem with the color plates being assembled in the back. Besides, you were smart enough to drop b/w halftones in as placeholders.
And from Rusty Burke, who has been intimately involved with the editorial end of the REH series: “Thing’s freakin’ gorgeous. The whole point that Marcelo sold me on when we discussed the REH Library project was that our books would show REH being treated with the kind of respect he deserved, and that the presentation of quality editions would make people think he was indeed a writer who was worthy of respect. I work my tail off on the editorial matters because I want them to be as worthy as the physical presentation. I thank you for continuing the series with the same level of respect.”
We’re hard at work now on the next book, The Best of Robert E. Howard, volume one: Crimson Shadows, and hope to have it out very early in 2009. Jim and Ruth Keegan are going to use the opportunity to touch up a few of their black and white illustrations, and we’ve commissioned some brand new color art for the volume — though we don’t yet know how it’ll be used, for contractual reasons. We’ve also decided that the Best Of volumes will be the most limited yet (with only 750 limited edition copies and 50 deluxe copies) so get your order in early. If you have a series number we need to match, please mention it in the comments field. If you’re paying via PayPal, you need to send us a separate email with this information.
