Connie Willis and Cory Doctorow Win LOCUS Awards

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

The Winds of Marble ArchCongratulations to Connie Willis, who just snagged the Locus Award for Best Collection for her mammoth (nearly 300k words) gathering of tales, The Winds from Marble Arch and Other Stories. The book’s a treasure trove of all things Willis from classics such as “Blued Moon”, and “Fire Watch” to a number of stories that haven’t been collected before.

Subterranean OnlineCongrats are also in order for Cory Doctorow who walked off with the award for Best Novella for “After the Siege.” As luck would have it, we’d already chosen this tale of Cory’s to be our audio for the current issue of Subterranean Online. It’s over there now, in its two hours plus glory, just waiting for fans to appreciate it. Enjoy.

Look for the next issue of Subterranean Online to start next week, with original fiction by Mike Resnick (a new “Kirinyaga” universe novella), plus tales by the likes of David Prill, Tim Pratt, and a number of others.

In a career spanning 59 years, Vance has been responsible — more than any other writer in the field — for creating exotic alien cultures and living, breathing worlds, among them Tschai, Durdane and Big Planet, Trullion, Cadwal and Wyst, Aerlith, Fader and Dar Sai.

Now, in a single impressive volume, The Jack Vance Reader brings together three of the master’s very best planetary adventures: the internationally acclaimed Emphyrio, the classic interplanetary whodunnit, The Domains of Koryphon, and the provocative and unforgettable The Languages of Pao.

Yr Hate Mail cover3 small.jpg

I mean, really, whenever we’ve met up, John Scalzi’s been a really together guy. The closest I saw him to making this face was when I suggested — mildly suggested, mind you — that Guns N Roses was a far superior band to Journey. Scalzi, well, empurpled, and began to sputter, and I quickly directed him to Sebastian Bach, who was going through wannabe rock star gyrations on the stage.

Seriously, this is the cover to Your Hate Mail will be Graded, the ten year retrospective of Scalzi’s blog, Whatever. I specifically requested that we use this photo on the front of the dust jacket, and he agreed, on one condition: that he be allowed to specify what went on the back cover.

Live in fear. We’ll show you that image soon.

The contracts come and go, and the new material we’re going to publish arrives as well. Here’s just a taste of what we’ve seen recently.

Ray Bradbury:

We’ve received the stories (one of them unpublished, as well as a previously unpublished treatment for a screenplay), as well as a copy of a full color painting by Mr. B for his collection of robot stories, provisionally titled Marionettes, Inc. Also on the Bradbury front, Mr. B’s longtime friend and bibliographer Donn Albright dug out material for the mystery omnibus we’ll be publishing next year, including the 64-year-old unpublished tale, “Where Everything Ends,” that formed the basis for Death is a Lonely Business.

Along with the material for next year’s Bradbury stories, Vincent Chong just turned in the striking cover for Summer Morning, Summer Night, the gathering of 27 Green Town stories slated for a Halloween release.

John Scalzi:

St. Martin’s has just been kind enough to send us the contract for John’s Old Man’s War-related novel, The Last Colony. Once he’s done with a few other projects, Vincent Chong will start on the artwork. Look for our edition to arrive late in the year.

Cherie Priest:

Cherie’s just completed a new steampunk, zombies, and civil war novel, The Boneshaker, which Tor will be releasing next year. Her next project for us, after Those Who Went Remain There Still comes out this fall, will be a short novel (40-50k word), Clementine, set in the same steampunk world of The Boneshaker. After seeing the proposal for this one, we can’t wait to read the finished story.

The Graveyard Book

A Special Offer for Your Final Arrangements
Become a Permanent Member of the Graveyard’s Posthumous Crew

As you may have heard, our graveyard’s newest resident is a living boy with a curious disposition and a tendency to wander. Frankly, it’s a marvel he’s survived this long; but we do our best to keep an eye on him. We confess, it’s something of a full time job.

Would you like to take a turn at watching him? The cemetery may be formally closed to new burials, but for the right sort of soul…exceptions can be made.
