Announcing HUNTER’S RUN by George R.R. Martin, Gardner Dozois, and Daniel Abraham

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

As George R.R. Martin writes about his new novel:

A three-way collaboration with my good friends Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham, Hunter’s Run tells the tale of Ramon Espejo, a prospector searching for a big strike on a distant world who finds rather more than he bargained for…and along the way must wrestle with what it means to be human.

If that sounds a bit familiar, it should. Yes, Hunter’s Run is a novel length expansion of “Shadow Twin,” the novella that Gardner began in the 70s, I continued in the 80s, and Daniel completed in the 00s. For much of the past twenty years, I have been telling Gardner that it needed to be a novel. I said the same thing to Daniel when he came aboard. And what do you know? I was right all along…

The Subterranean Press edition will feature a full color dustjacket and several full color interior illustrations by Bob Eggleton.

SKY HORIZON by David Brin

SKY HORIZON

David Brin’s entry into Robert A. Heinlein juvenile territory, Sky Horizon, is in stock and shipping, and captures the spirit and energy of RAH’s work for younger readers perfectly. From Green Man Review: “Sky Horizon got only better and better as the story progressed. The momentum in the second half of this short work was solid, and in the end, Brin achieved what he meant to, I think; he made me want more. I would definitely read the next book. I look forward to it, in fact. The narrative seemed to be hitting its stride in the final quarter of the novel, effectively setting up a much wider story arc. This was intended as the first installment of a longer series, and it does a fantastic job of wrapping up one storyline while opening a whole new realm of possible action and adventure.”

Glowing Reviews for Brian Lumley and Connie Willis

The Taint and Other Novellas

Publishers Weekly has recently weighed in on two retrospective collections coming soon.

On The Taint and Other Novellas by Brian Lumley:
“Lumley fans will welcome this collection of seven longer Cthulhu Mythos tales from the prolific British author (Necroscope), on whom H.P. Lovecraft was an important influence… Perhaps most memorable is the 2005 title story, which, despite being set in Lovecraft’s haunted seaport of Innsmouth, avoids Mythos clichés and comes across as distinctly the author’s own.”

The Winds of Marble Arch and Other StoriesAnd a starred review for The Winds of Marble Arch and Other Stories by Connie Willis:
“Willis makes brilliant short fiction look easy in this collection of 23 novellas and short stories, which display a powerful range of sensibility, from poignant tenderness (’Inn’) and heartbreak (’Samaritan’) to close-to-the-bone satire (’Even the Queen’) and blackest savagery (’All My Darling Daughters’)… another eerie blizzard brings the collection to a masterful close in ‘Epiphany,’ opening a door between our puny reality and the Great Carnival around and above us all, even though we rarely perceive it. Willis’s gift promises that signs are everywhere; we just have to learn to recognize them.”

Announcing Temeraire: His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Subterranean Press is proud to announce the first volume of one of the most beloved fantasy series currently being published.

Please note: We have all four of Naomi Novik’s Temeraire books under contract, and can offer matching numbers to collectors interested in a matched set. The first of them, His Majesty’s Dragon, is now available for preorder.

Rather than reveal plot points, we’ll assume you’re familiar with the novels’ basic premise that a British naval officer in the Napoleonic wars unintentionally becomes the handler of a combat dragon. Instead, here’s just a brief taste of the raves these novels have been receiving:

“Temeraire is a terrifically entertaining fantasy novel. Is it hard to imagine a cross between Susanna Clarke, of Norrell and Strange fame, and the late Patrick O’Brian? Not if you’ve read this wonderful, arresting novel.”
–Stephen King

“A completely authentic tale, brimming with all the detail and richness one look for in military yarns as well as the impossible wonder of gilded fantasy.” (Editor’s Choice, Grade: A)
–Entertainment Weekly

“A superbly written, character-driven series…what keeps one turning the pages is the urge to find out what happens next to Captain Laurence and Temeraire, characters who win one’s heart from the beginning. Bravos for a most promising new author!”
–Booklist (starred review)

The Subterranean Press limited editions will feature a full-color dustjacket by original Temeraire illustrator Dominic Harman, plus four full color illustrations (in the limited edition), with a fifth illustration exclusive to the lettered edition by Anke Eissmann. In addition, our volumes will be printed in two colors throughout on 80# Finch paper to bring the novels a level of class and grace they so richly deserve.

Limited: 500 signed numbered hardcover copies: $125
Lettered: 52 signed deluxe bound hardcovers, housed in a custom traycase, with a piece of full color art not in the limited edition: $300
